Nei pressi di un fiume, in Africa, si tende ad aver paura del coccodrillo, perché è un animale che ricorda la preistoria, sembra un drago e con i suoi denti aguzzi e la potenza delle sue mascelle può trascinare in un attimo nel fondo delle acque.
Si ha paura del Leone, il re della foresta.
Difficilmente, invece, si teme l'ippopotamo.
Forse per via di alcune pubblicità e cartoni animati che lo propone positivamente, viene immaginato con un'aria dolce e tranquilla.
In realtà, l'ippopotamo è da considerarsi un temibile "predatore" per l'uomo... Non è ovviamente un predatore in senso stretto, non si nutre di carne umana, ma, statisticamente, l'ippopotamo è il mammifero che causa più morti!!
Più del leone o dei grandi alligatori.
E' molto territoriale e tende a difendere il suo habitat. Inoltre, detesta essere disturbato. Durante un safari, se incontrate un ippopotamo, non lasciatevi ingannare dal suo aspetto docile e innocuo.
L'ippopotamo ha un aspetto tozzo: le zampe sono corte, la testa è grande, il corpo è di forma cilindrica.

Difficilmente un adulto viene predato. Ha circa 40 denti, ma 4 sono enormi ed aguzzi come zanne: possono superare mezzo metro. La sua pelle si cicatrizza con una una velocità straordinaria.
La sua bocca costituisce un record: spalancata potrebbe essere la bocca più grande!
